What PSI is safe for washing a car?

Roughly 1,200 to 1,900 PSI is widely considered safe for automotive clear coat, as long as you use a wide nozzle and keep about two feet of distance. More pressure doesn't clean better; it just raises the risk of etching the paint if the tip gets too close. Flow rate (GPM) actually matters more than chasing a big PSI number, because more water rinses grit away faster and more gently.

Can a pressure washer damage car paint?

Yes, if it's misused. A narrow 0-degree (red) tip held close can strip wax, lift already-chipped paint, or force water past trim and seals. Used correctly (a 40- or 25-degree tip, roughly two feet away, kept moving), a washer in the safe PSI range is actually gentler on paint than scrubbing, because it lifts grit instead of dragging it across the surface. Do I need a foam cannon?

Not strictly, but it's one of the best upgrades for avoiding swirl marks. A foam cannon lays down a thick layer of soap that soaks and lifts grit off the paint before your mitt ever touches it, so there's less grit to drag around. What is the difference between a foam cannon and a foam gun?

A foam cannon attaches to a pressure washer and uses that high pressure to produce thick, clingy foam. A foam gun attaches to an ordinary garden hose, so it's cheaper and simpler but makes thinner, wetter foam at much lower pressure. What is the best soap for a foam cannon?

You want a dedicated, high-foaming car shampoo that is pH-neutral, so it foams thickly without stripping wax, sealant or a ceramic coating. What is pH-neutral soap?

A pH-neutral car soap sits around pH 7, meaning it is neither strongly acidic nor alkaline. That is what lets it clean safely and often without stripping the wax, sealant or ceramic coating you have already applied. What is the two-bucket method?

The two-bucket method uses one bucket of soapy water and a second bucket of clean rinse water. After each pass over the car, you rinse your mitt in the plain-water bucket before reloading it with soap, so the grit you just picked up ends up in the rinse bucket instead of back on your paint. What is a grit guard?

A grit guard is a plastic grate that sits in the bottom of a wash bucket. When you dunk your mitt, the guard's fins knock grit loose and trap it at the bottom, and the raised grate keeps you from dragging your mitt back through that settled dirt. Why use a microfiber mitt instead of a sponge?

A deep-pile microfiber or chenille mitt pulls grit up off the paint and holds it in the nap, away from the surface, until you rinse it out. A flat sponge or cloth has nowhere to store that grit, so it just drags the dirt back and forth across your clear coat, which is exactly how swirl marks form. How do I avoid swirl marks?

Swirls come from grit being dragged across the paint, so the whole game is removing grit before you touch the surface and not reintroducing it. Rinse the car well, lay down foam to lift loose dirt, then wash with a plush microfiber mitt using the two-bucket method and a grit guard, moving in straight lines rather than circles. Do ceramic spray coatings actually work?

Yes, within limits. A spray ceramic adds a thin hydrophobic layer that makes water bead and sheet off and adds some gloss, typically lasting a few weeks to a few months depending on the product and conditions. Should I get a gas or electric pressure washer for my car?

For washing a car, electric is the better default. Electric units sit comfortably in the paint-safe pressure range, are quieter and lighter, and need no fuel or maintenance, while gas washers make far more pressure than paint needs and are overkill unless you also clean concrete or large surfaces. Is snow foam worth it?

Snow foam is a pre-wash step: you cover the car in thick foam, let it dwell to soften and lift road grime, then rinse it off before you touch the paint with a mitt. What nozzle should I use to wash a car?

Stick to wide-angle tips: a 40-degree (white) nozzle for general rinsing and soaping, or a 25-degree (green) for a bit more bite on stubborn dirt. Avoid the 0-degree (red) tip entirely on paint, since that narrow jet can strip coatings or damage the finish. Foam cannons usually come with their own nozzle. What is the difference between washing and detailing a car?

A wash removes dirt and gets the car clean; detailing is the deeper process of restoring and protecting it, which can include clay-barring, paint correction, coatings and interior work.
