That range comfortably rinses dirt and blasts off a foam pre-soak, with a healthy safety margin if your technique slips for a second.

The temptation, standing in the store aisle, is to buy the biggest number on the box. Resist it. A pressure washer’s job in a car wash is modest — rinse loose dirt, then rinse the foam off — and that job is done more safely at moderate pressure. Above the safe window you are not buying a cleaner car; you are buying risk, because a careless second too close with a narrow tip is exactly how clear coat gets etched.

Why flow (GPM) matters more than pressure (PSI)

PSI gets all the attention, but for washing a car, flow rate — measured in gallons per minute, or GPM — is quietly the more useful spec. Pressure is what does damage when misused; flow is what actually cleans gently. A higher volume of water rinses foam off faster and floats grit up and away from the surface rather than driving it in. Technique: distance, angle and movement

The machine and the nozzle set the ceiling for how much pressure can reach the paint, but your technique decides how much actually does. Three habits keep you safe:

  • Standoff distance of about two feet. Pressure at the surface drops off quickly as you back away, so distance is your simplest safety control. Start farther out and only close in for a stubborn spot, with a wide tip.
  • Keep the wand moving.Damage comes from dwelling — holding a concentrated stream on one spot. A moving fan spreads the energy out over the panel and never lingers long enough to do harm.
  • Mind the angle around edges and trim. Spraying straight into panel gaps, badges, mirror seals, door edges and any chipped or lifting paint can force water underneath or peel a weak edge. Angle the spray along surfaces rather than blasting directly into seams.

A good gut check: if the spray is rippling badging, rattling trim, or making a harsh slapping sound on the panel, you are too close or on too narrow a tip. Back off or widen the fan. Rinsing a car should feel and sound gentle.
