How to choose a car wash soap
Pick for your car’s protection first, then for foam and gloss. A soap can’t un-strip a coating, so start with pH and work outward.
pH, explained without the chemistry lecture
Neutral pH sits around 7 — safe over wax, sealant and ceramic. If you run any kind of protection, a pH-neutralshampoo (like the Adam’s pick) is the one that won’t quietly shorten its life. If your paint is bare, you have more latitude, and a pH-balanced all-rounder is fine. High-pH “stripping” washes exist for a reason — they prep paint before a new coating — but they’re a specialist tool, not a weekly soap. When in doubt, neutral is never the wrong answer.
Concentrate vs ready-to-use
Almost every soap worth buying is a concentrateyou dilute. That’s good — it’s cheaper per wash and lets you tune the strength. A super-concentrate like the Griot’s pick uses a tiny dose per bucket, so a pricey-looking bottle is actually excellent value once you do the per-wash math. The trade-off is you have to measure. If you’d rather not think about ratios, a cheaper standard concentrate you pour a little more freely is a fair compromise.
Wash-and-wax vs pure cleaner
Some shampoos add conditioners or gloss agents (the Meguiar’s pick) that leave paint slick and bright. They’re lovely on an uncoated car. But those same additives leave a residue that a fresh ceramic or sealant doesn’t want to bond over, so skip wash-and-wax soaps right before you coatand use a plain, neutral cleaner instead. Match the soap to what you’re about to do.
Dilution and getting your money’s worth
Follow the label ratio — more soap past a point doesn’t clean better, it just costs more and can leave streaks. For a foam cannonyou mix a stronger solution in the cannon bottle; for a bucket wash you use a capful or two in a couple of gallons.
