Foam Cannon vs Your Pressure Washer's Soap Tank

Your washer already has a detergent tank, so why buy a cannon? Because of how that tank works — it only feeds soap when the machine drops to low pressure, which is exactly when it cannot make foam.

It is a completely fair question. You bought a pressure washer with a detergent tank built into it. It has a soap symbol on the lid. Why would you now buy a separate plastic bottle to hang off the end of the wand?

The answer is not marketing. It is that the onboard tank is plumbed in a way that makes thick foam mechanically impossible, and once you know how it is fed, everything about its behavior makes sense — including why it stops dispensing soap the moment you change nozzles.

How the onboard tank actually feeds

Your washer does not have a pump for detergent. It has a siphon, and the siphon is opened by a pressure drop rather than by a switch.

Generac’s own support documentation describes the mechanism plainly. The detergent nozzle — the black one — has “a larger opening than the other nozzles”. That larger opening “creates low pressure at the nozzle and reduces pressure on the outlet port of the pump”, which causes “the spring-loaded ball to drop inside the detergent injector port to draw the detergent into the water stream”. Fit a high-pressure tip instead and “no detergent will be drawn into the pump since it will not create the required pressure drop”.

Read that twice, because it contains the whole answer. Soap only flows when the machine has deliberately thrown away its pressure. The tank is not weak by accident; low pressure is the trigger that makes it work at all.

Why that makes foam impossible

A foam cannon does something quite different. It takes the machine’s full flow and pressure, draws soap into that moving stream through a Venturi, and then forces the mixture through a fine mesh. The mesh is the bit that whips it into lather, and it needs energy and volume to do so — Chemical Guys publishes a 1.4 GPM minimum with 2.0 GPM recommended for its Max Foam 8, across a 500 to 3,500 PSI range.

The onboard tank offers neither condition. It delivers soap at the lowest pressure the machine can produce, through a wide nozzle, with no mesh anywhere in the path. What comes out is soapy water. It wets the car, it runs down the panels, and it is gone in under a minute.

That dwell row is the one that matters for paint. The pre-soak works by giving surfactant time to soften and float grit before your mitt arrives. Soap that has slid off the panel in twenty seconds has not done that job.

“My washer has an onboard foam cannon, though”

Then you have a different thing, and the naming is genuinely confusing. Some machines ship an actual cannon rather than a plumbed tank — Sun Joe supplies the current SPX3000 XTREAM with a 33.8 fl oz onboard foam cannon, for instance. That is a real cannon with a real mesh, and it foams.

The distinction to check is whether the soap reservoir lives on the machine and feeds through the wand (a detergent tank — low pressure, no mesh) or clips onto the end of the wand as a bottle(a cannon — full pressure, mesh). If it is the latter, you already have the tool; an aftermarket cannon then buys you finer ratio adjustment and a spray fan you can dial, not a different category of result. When the onboard tank is still the right tool

It is not useless, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. The tank wins whenever you want chemical onto a surface quickly and do not care whether it clings:

  • Driveways, patios, siding. Degreaser or cleaner applied wide and fast, then rinsed. Cling is irrelevant.
  • Wheel arches and underbody. Somewhere you want volume of solution rather than a photogenic blanket.
  • When you cannot be bothered. Nothing to fill, nothing to rinse out afterwards. For a quick rinse-down between proper washes, that counts.

One caution either way: thick snow foams are poor candidates for an onboard tank, because heavy formulas clog siphon tubes and injectors. If you have bought a proper snow foam, it belongs in a cannon. Keep the tank for thin, free-rinsing detergents.

The short version

The onboard tank is a soap delivery system. A cannon is a foam generation system. They are not competing implementations of the same idea, which is why no amount of fiddling with the tank gets you the result you have seen in videos. If the pre-soak is what you are after — and for washing paint without swirls, it should be — you need the mesh.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my pressure washer's soap tank make foam?

Because of how it is fed. The detergent tank draws through a siphon that only opens when pressure at the pump outlet drops, and that drop only happens when you fit the wide black low-pressure nozzle. So the machine is at its weakest precisely when soap is flowing — and thick foam needs pressure and volume through a mesh, which is the opposite condition.

Why does my pressure washer stop dispensing soap with a normal nozzle?

That is the system working as designed, not a fault. Generac explains that the black detergent nozzle has a larger opening than the others, which creates low pressure at the nozzle and drops a spring-loaded ball inside the injector port to draw detergent in. Fit a high-pressure tip and that pressure drop never happens, so no detergent is drawn at all.

Is a foam cannon better than the onboard detergent tank?

For a pre-wash soak, clearly yes — a cannon makes thick foam that clings for minutes while the tank produces a wet soapy rinse that runs straight off. For applying a cleaner you want to work fast and rinse off, like a driveway degreaser, the tank is simpler and there is nothing to fill. They are different jobs.

Can I put snow foam in my pressure washer's detergent tank?

You can, but thick snow foams are the worst candidates for it — heavy formulas are prone to clogging siphon tubes and injectors, and the tank cannot whip them into lather anyway. If you have bought a proper snow foam, put it in a cannon. Keep the onboard tank for thin, free-rinsing detergents.

Do I still need the soap tank if I have a foam cannon?

Not for washing a car. Once you own a cannon the tank becomes a convenience for other jobs — patio cleaner, wheel arches, general grime — where you want chemical on a surface quickly and do not care whether it clings. Plenty of people never use it again, and that is a perfectly reasonable outcome.
