Will a Foam Cannon Fit My Pressure Washer?
Most cannons ship with a 1/4-inch quick-connect. Most machines take one. The exceptions — Kärcher's twist-lock, and the two M22 sizes that thread together but leak — are what catch people out.

This is the question that stops most first foam-cannon purchases, and it deserves a proper answer rather than “check compatibility”. The good news is that there are only three connector families in play, adapters for all of them cost a few dollars, and you can identify yours in about ten seconds by looking at the end of your trigger gun.
The bad news is that one of those families has a trap in it: two variants that screw together perfectly and then leak the moment you pull the trigger.
The short version
- 1/4-inch quick-connect— the industry standard on most consumer electric washers, and what most cannons ship with. Plug it in, done.
- M22 threaded— common on gas machines and some electrics. Needs an M22-to-quick-connect adapter, and you must know whether yours is 14 mm or 15 mm.
- Kärcher twist-lock— proprietary. Needs a Kärcher-specific adapter. No exceptions.
How to identify your fitting in ten seconds
Look at the end of the trigger gun— where the lance screws or clips in — not at the machine body and not at the faucet end of the hose.
- A brass or steel plug with a sliding metal collar around it. That is a 1/4-inch quick-connect. Pull the collar back and the lance pops out. This is the easy case: almost any cannon will click straight in.
- A visible screw thread, roughly 22 mm across, with a stem in the middle. That is M22. The thread is the same on every M22 fitting; the stem in the middle is what varies, and it is what seals.
- A plastic collar that twists a quarter turn to lock the lance. Proprietary, and on a domestic machine it is almost always Kärcher.
The M22 trap: 14 mm versus 15 mm
This is the one worth reading carefully, because it produces a failure that looks like a faulty part.
As AR Blue Clean, who make pressure washers, put it: the M designates a metric thread and the 22 is the outer thread diameter in millimeters. That outer thread is identicalon both variants. What differs is the inner stem — 14 mm on one, 15 mm on the other — and it is that stem, carrying an o-ring, that actually makes the seal inside the mating fitting's bore.
The consequence is the trap: successful threading does not guarantee a proper seal. Screw a 14 mm stem into a 15 mm bore and the threads tighten normally while the o-ring has nothing to seal against — you get a spray of water out of the joint the instant you pull the trigger. Go the other way and a 15 mm stem simply will not enter a 14 mm bore at all.
As a rough guide, M22×14 mm predominates on gas machines and aftermarket accessories, while M22×15 mm has historically been used on electric washers and their spray guns — but this is a tendency, not a rule, and manufacturers have moved. If you have calipers, measure the stem. If you do not, a 14 mm bore looks visibly narrower next to a 15 mm one when you have both in front of you, and the cheapest fix is a step adapter, which costs very little and lives in the toolbox permanently.
Going from M22 to a quick-connect cannon
Most cannons on the market today terminate in a 1/4-inch quick-connect plug, because that is what most consumer machines want. If your gun is M22, the fix is a single adapter — an M22 thread on one end, a 1/4-inch quick-connect socket on the other. MJJC, who make foam cannons, sell exactly this and note it fits M22 trigger guns regardless of whether the thread is male or female.
Buy the adapter at the same time as the cannon. It is a few dollars, it is the single most common missing piece, and there is nothing more irritating than a cannon sitting on the bench for three days waiting for a fitting.
Kärcher, and why it is its own category
Kärcher uses a proprietary twist-lock lance connection. Nothing with a 1/4-inch quick-connect will attach to it directly, and no amount of thread adapters help because it is not a thread.
The solution is a Kärcher-specific adapter that converts the bayonet to a standard quick-connect. They are cheap and widely stocked, and once fitted the machine behaves like any other. If you own a K1700 or similar and are shopping for a cannon, budget for that adapter as part of the purchase.
Some Sun Joe and Greenworks models also use non-standard arrangements depending on generation, so the ten-second check above is worth doing even on brands you would expect to be standard.
Fitment is not your foam problem
One last thing, because it saves people from buying a second cannon for no reason. A cannon that is fitted correctly and still makes thin, watery foam almost never has a fitment issue. It has a flow issue.
The brass orifice inside a cannon is sized for a range of flow. Garage Nirvana's orifice guide gives the shape of it: something like 1.1 mm suits a small electric machine around 1.2 GPM, while progressively larger bores match progressively higher-flow units. Put a cannon designed for a 2.0 GPM machine on a 1.1 GPM one and you get exactly the disappointing result people blame the cannon for.
If your foam is thin, work through the six causes of thin foam before buying anything else. Dilution and flow rate account for most of it. And if the machine genuinely is the bottleneck, that is a washer problem, not a cannon problem.
A short checklist before you order
- Look at the end of the trigger gun and identify the fitting.
- If it is M22, work out whether the stem is 14 mm or 15 mm, and add a step adapter to the basket if you are unsure.
- If it is Kärcher, add the Kärcher-to-quick-connect adapter.
- Check the machine's GPM. Below roughly 1.2 GPM, fix that before spending on a better cannon.

Do foam cannons fit all pressure washers?

Will a foam cannon fit a Kärcher?
Only with an adapter. Kärcher machines use a proprietary bayonet-style twist-lock lance connection rather than the industry 1/4-inch quick-connect. The adapters are inexpensive and widely available, but you need to order one alongside the cannon or it will simply not attach.
How do I tell which fitting my pressure washer has?

A correctly fitted cannon on an under-flowing machine will make thin foam every time. Check the machine's GPM before blaming the cannon.
