Foam Cannons for Kärcher Pressure Washers

Kärcher is the one brand where the model number changes the answer. K2 to K7 take the bayonet; the US K1700 to K2300 line takes a standard quick-connect — and buying for the wrong half is the classic mistake.

Almost every “will it fit my Kärcher” answer online is half right, which is worse than being wrong. The usual version — Kärcher uses a proprietary twist-lock, so you always need an adapter — is true of one part of the range and flatly false of another. If you buy on that advice you have a coin-flip chance of ordering hardware you cannot use.

The line splits in two, and which side you are on is written on the machine.

The evidence for that second row comes from Kärcher itself. Its documentation for the FJ 6 foam nozzle lists compatibility across the K1 to K5 range and then states the exclusion outright: the FJ 6 is not compatible with K1700–K2300 power washers, or with gas pressure washers. Cannon makers say the same thing from the other direction — MJJC’s fitting guide sends K1600 through K2300 owners to the 1/4-inch quick-connect model, and everyone else to the K-series bayonet adapter.

If you own a K1700, K1800 or K2000–K2300

Good news: you have the easy case, and you can ignore every “Kärcher needs a special adapter” warning you have read. Your trigger gun ends in a standard 1/4-inch quick-connect, which is the fitting most cannons on the market ship with. Pull the collar back, push the cannon in, done.

The thing actually worth your attention on these machines is not fitment at all — it is flow. The K1700 delivers roughly 1.2 GPM, and Chemical Guys publishes a 1.4 GPM minimum for its Max Foam 8 with 2.0 GPM recommended. You are under the reference floor.

That is not a reason to avoid a cannon. It is a reason to set expectations and to spend your money in the right place. The pre-soak still floats grit off the paint before your mitt makes contact, which is the entire safety argument for foaming in the first place. It just will not look like the product photography. Put the budget into a real snow foam rather than a fancier cannon — on a low-flow machine, soap is the only lever with real travel in it.

If you own a K2, K3, K4, K5 or K7

You have the bayonet fitting, and you have two routes.

Route one: Kärcher’s own FJ 6

It cannot be the wrong fitting, which on this side of the range is a genuine benefit. One caveat from Kärcher’s own notes: on trigger guns made in 2010 or earlier — the gun M, 96 and 97 designs — the FJ 6 additionally requires Adapter M, part 2.643-950.0. If your machine is that vintage, order the adapter at the same time.

Route two: an adapter plus a standard cannon

A bayonet-to-quick-connect adapter is a few dollars and permanently converts your gun to the industry standard. After that, every cannon on the market is available to you, along with every quick-connect nozzle. If you think you might ever change machines, this is the more future-proof spend.

Which is better depends on how much you care about tidiness versus flexibility. Neither makes thicker foam — that is decided by your flow rate and your soap, exactly as it is on every other machine.

How to check which half you are on

Do not go by the badge on the front. Go by the end of the trigger gun:

  • A plastic collar that twists a quarter turn to lock the lance in place — that is the bayonet. K2 to K7 territory.
  • A square metal plug with a sliding collar you pull back to release the lance — that is a 1/4-inch quick-connect. K1700 to K2300 territory.

The short version

  1. K1700–K2300: buy any standard quick-connect cannon. Do not buy an FJ 6; Kärcher says it will not fit.
  2. K2–K7: buy the FJ 6, or a bayonet adapter plus any cannon you like. Add Adapter M if the gun predates 2011.
  3. Either way, expect your flow rate rather than your cannon to decide how thick the foam gets — and buy good snow foam before you buy a better cannon.

Frequently asked questions

Will a normal foam cannon fit a Kärcher?

It depends which Kärcher. The K2 to K7 machines use a proprietary bayonet lance fitting, so a standard 1/4-inch quick-connect cannon needs a bayonet adapter. The US K1700 to K2300 line is different — those take a 1/4-inch quick-connect, so an ordinary cannon fits with no brand-specific parts at all.

Does the Kärcher FJ 6 fit a K1700?

No. Kärcher's own documentation for the FJ 6 foam nozzle states that it is not compatible with K1700–K2300 power washers or with gas pressure washers. The FJ 6 is a bayonet accessory built for the K1 to K5 machines. If you own a K1700 you want a standard quick-connect cannon instead, which is the cheaper route anyway.

What does Adapter M do?

It covers older Kärcher machines. Kärcher notes that the FJ 6 needs Adapter M, part 2.643-950.0, on trigger guns made in 2010 or earlier — the gun M, 96 and 97 designs. If your machine is that vintage and you want the brand's own foam nozzle, budget for the adapter as part of the purchase or it simply will not attach.

Will a K1700 make good foam?

It will make foam, but expect it thinner than the photographs. The K1700 delivers around 1.2 GPM, which sits below the 1.4 GPM minimum Chemical Guys publishes for its Max Foam 8. That is a flow ceiling rather than a fitment fault, and no cannon upgrade lifts it. Use a dedicated snow foam and dose generously to compensate.

Is the Kärcher FJ 6 better than a third-party cannon?

It is more convenient on a K2–K5 and it cannot be the wrong fitting, which is worth something. On foam quality it has no inherent advantage — the mesh and the Venturi work the same way on a $20 cannon, and your machine's flow rate and your soap dominate the result either way. If you already own a bayonet adapter, a standard cannon is usually the better value.
