How Often Should You Wash Your Car?
Every two weeks is the usual answer, and it's incomplete. What actually matters is what's sitting on the paint right now — and whether washing more often helps depends entirely on how you wash.

Ask this question anywhere and you will get “every two weeks”. It is a fine starting point and it is not really an answer, because the number depends almost entirely on where the car lives and what lands on it. A garaged weekend car and a daily driver parked under a lime tree next to a salted road have nothing in common.
There is also a more interesting question hiding underneath, and it is the one worth answering first: does washing more often protect the paint, or wear it out?
The answer depends on how you wash, not how often
Washing does not damage paint. Bad washing damages paint, and it does so every single time. Trade coverage of where swirl marks come from is blunt about it: most fine clear-coat scratching is inflicted during washing, by dragging trapped grit across the surface.
That reframes the whole question. If you wash with one bucket and a sponge, or run the car through a brush-style automatic wash, then yes — washing weekly will visibly dull your paint within a year or two, and washing less often genuinely reduces the damage. If you wash with a pre-rinse, a foam pre-soak, the two-bucket method and a careful dry, the wear per wash is negligible and frequent washing is straightforwardly good for the car.

A realistic baseline schedule
Every two weeks — the default
A car parked outside in ordinary conditions, driven regularly, with no unusual exposure. This keeps road film from building into something that needs aggressive cleaning, which is the practical goal: routine dirt removed easily beats accumulated grime removed with effort.
Weekly — the harsher cases
Move to weekly if any of these apply: salted winter roads, coastal air with salt spray, parking under trees that drop sap or attract birds, a commute past industrial or construction sites, or a lot of highway miles collecting bug splatter.
Monthly — the easy cases
A garaged car driven occasionally can stretch comfortably. It avoids UV, rain, bird droppings and most fallout, so contamination arrives far more slowly. Dust still settles, but a waterless wash handles light dust between proper washes.
The things that will not wait
More important than any schedule: some contaminants damage paint quickly and should be removed the day you notice them, regardless of when the next wash is due.
- Bird droppings. Acidic, and in hot sun they can etch clear coat within days. The single most common cause of small permanent marks on otherwise well-kept cars.
- Bug splatter. Also acidic, and it bonds hard once baked on. Far easier to remove fresh.
- Tree sap. Hardens and bonds to the clear coat; left long enough it needs solvents or clay rather than a wash.
- Road salt. Actively accelerates corrosion, which is why winter advice centers on frequent rinsing and particular attention to the undercarriage, wheel wells and lower panels.

For these, a spot clean beats a full wash. A quick detail spray or waterless wash on the affected area, with plenty of lubricant and a clean towel, removes the threat in two minutes without washing the whole car.
Protection changes the math
A well-protected car needs washing less often and is safer to wash when you do. A wax, sealant or spray ceramic makes the surface slicker, so dirt keys to it less readily and releases more easily, which means less contact and less mechanical risk per wash.

What about automatic car washes?
Touchless automatic washes are a reasonable compromise when the alternative is a salt-caked car and no way to wash it — they use strong chemicals and no physical contact, so the risk is stripped protection rather than scratches. A touchless wash through winter is far better than leaving salt on the car.
Brush and cloth automatic washes are a different matter. Those brushes contact every car that came before yours, carrying whatever grit came with them. They are one of the most reliable ways to fill a car with swirl marks, and washing more often through one makes it worse in direct proportion.
The short version
Wash every two weeks as a baseline, weekly in salt or heavy exposure, monthly if garaged — and deal with bird droppings, sap and salt the day they appear rather than waiting.
