These two turn up on the same shortlist constantly, and for good reason: they are the obvious mid-market choices for someone who has decided to wash their car properly. They are also genuinely different machines that happen to occupy similar price territory. One is built around moving water; the other is built around being gentle and small. Working out which matters more to you takes about two minutes.
The short answer
Buy the Sun Joe SPX3000 if you want a foam cannon. Its higher flow rate makes dramatically better foam and rinses a large vehicle faster. It is the better all-rounder and the one we recommend more often.
Buy the Kärcher K1700 if storage is tight or gentleness is the priority. It is the compact, better-finished machine, it runs milder, and it disappears into a cupboard. If you drive a small car, wash it in a shared space, and are nervous about pressure near paint, it is the more reassuring object to own.
Flow rate: the difference that matters most
The headline spec gap is not pressure — it is water volume. The Sun Joe moves roughly 1.76 GPM; the Kärcher roughly 1.2 GPM. That is a substantial difference, and it shows up in three places every single wash.
Foam. A foam cannonmakes lather by pushing water through a fine mesh. More water through the mesh means more foam, thicker foam, and faster coverage. The K1700 runs a cannon perfectly well but produces a visibly thinner layer that builds more slowly. Since the foam pre-soak is doing the real scratch prevention — lifting grit before your mitttouches the paint — this is not a cosmetic difference.
Rinse speed. More flow clears a soaped panel in fewer passes. On a hatchback this is a minor convenience. On a large SUV, the Sun Joe will save you real time on every wash.
Grit clearance. A higher volume of water floats loosened dirt away from the surface rather than dribbling it down the panel. It is a small contribution to a safe wash, but it is on the right side of the ledger.
Pressure: closer than the numbers suggest
The Sun Joe is rated higher, the Kärcher at 1700 PSI. Both sit inside the roughly 1,200–1,900 PSIwindow detailers consider safe for clear coat — the Kärcher comfortably mid-range, the Sun Joe near the top. Used properly, with a 25° or 40° tip and about two feet of standoff, neither presents a problem for healthy paint.
The K1700’s real advantage here is margin for error. There is simply less pressure available to misuse, so the classic mistakes — drifting too close, lingering on one spot, grabbing a narrow tip for a stubborn mark — carry less consequence. Build, size and storage
The Kärcher wins this section without much argument. It is the tidier, more solid-feeling machine, it carries CETA certification, and the compact upright form genuinely fits in an apartment cupboard. If your storage is a shelf rather than a garage floor, that may settle the whole decision on its own.
The Sun Joe is bulkier and more utilitarian, with plastic fittings that feel cheaper. In exchange you get five quick-connect tips and two onboard detergent tanks, which is more usable kit in the box. Neither machine is fragile; they simply show their priorities.
Which should you actually buy?
Answer one question: is a foam cannon part of your plan?If yes — and for a scratch-free wash it should be — take the Sun Joe. The flow advantage is the single biggest practical difference between these machines, and foam quality is where you will notice it every week.
If you genuinely will not use a cannon, drive something small, and value a compact, well-made machine you can put away easily, the Kärcher is a lovely thing to own and completely sufficient for the job.

Do I need an adapter to fit a foam cannon to either?
Possibly, and it differs. Most aftermarket foam cannons use a 1/4-inch quick-connect plug. Kärcher machines commonly use a proprietary twist-lock lance fitting that needs an inexpensive brass adapter, and some Sun Joe models do too. Check the end of your wand before ordering a cannon — it is a two-minute check that saves a return.
