Which Foam Cannon Fits My Pressure Washer?

“Foam cannon for pressure washer” is one of those searches where the honest answer is a question back: which pressure washer? Not because cannons are fussy — most of them are genuinely universal — but because two things about your machine decide whether a given cannon will bolt on, and whether it will foam once it does.
Those two things are the connector at the end of your trigger gun and the flow rate your pump delivers. Get the first wrong and the cannon will not attach. Get the second wrong and it attaches perfectly and produces disappointing, watery foam that you will blame on the cannon for months. Here is how to settle both in a couple of minutes.
Step 1: what does your trigger gun end in?
Look at the end of the trigger gun, where the lance attaches — not the machine body, and not the tap end of the hose. There are only three answers that matter on a domestic machine.

Step 2: how much water does your machine actually move?
This is the step almost nobody takes, and it is the one that decides whether you end up happy. A cannon is a passive device: it mixes soap into whatever flow you feed it and pushes the result through a mesh. Feed it too little and no amount of adjustment produces thick lather.
Manufacturers publish a floor for this. Chemical Guys rates its Max Foam 8 at a minimum of 1.4 GPM, with 2.0 GPM recommended — and, at the other end, warns never to exceed 5.3 GPM. Treat 1.4 GPM as a useful reference point rather than a universal law, because cannons differ, but it is a sobering number once you look up what a typical compact electric washer actually delivers.
Plenty of genuinely good, genuinely paint-safe machines sit under it. A Kärcher K1700 is around 1.2 GPM. A Greenworks 1800 is around 1.1 GPM. Both wash a car beautifully and both will foam — just thinner and more slowly than the marketing photographs suggest. That is a flow ceiling, not a fault, and no cannon upgrade lifts it. Brand by brand
Most machines are the easy case. These are the ones with a real answer worth reading before you order.
Kärcher
The one brand where the model number genuinely changes the answer, and where a lot of published advice is wrong. Kärcher’s K2 to K7 machines use the bayonet lance fitting; the US K1700 to K2300 line does not. Kärcher’s own documentation for its FJ 6 foam nozzle states plainly that it is not compatible with K1700–K2300 machines or with gas washers. Sun Joe
Standard quick-connect, so fitment is a non-issue — but the SPX3000 ships with an onboard foam cannon of its own, which raises a fair question about whether you need another one. Greenworks, Ryobi and the other quick-connect brands
Generally straightforward: a standard quick-connect cannon clicks straight on. Some models put that quick-connect behind a proprietary wand, in which case a few-dollar gun adapter exposes a standard fitting. Check the end of your own gun using the table above rather than trusting a compatibility list. On the Greenworks 1800 in particular, flow rather than fitment is the thing to think about.
Cordless and battery washers

Step 3: pick the cannon
Once the connector and the flow are settled, the choice is smaller than the listings suggest — because on a given machine, with a given soap, the cheap cannon and the expensive one make remarkably similar foam. What changes is how long the thing survives and how pleasant it is to live with.
- Washing a few times a year? A budget quick-connect cannon is the right call. It foams to the limit your machine allows and costs about what a bottle of good snow foam does.
- Washing most weekends? Metal internals stop being a vanity purchase. The seals and threads on an all-plastic cannon are what weep first.
- Fixed budget and forced to choose? Spend it on better snow foam, not a better cannon. Soap moves the needle further, every time.
The short version
- Look at your trigger gun. A quick-connect means any cannon; a twist-lock collar means Kärcher-specific hardware or an adapter; a thread means M22 and a size to check.
- Look up your machine’s rated GPM. Under about 1.4 and you should expect thinner foam whatever you buy — plan around it rather than shopping to fix it.
- Buy the cheapest cannon that fits unless you wash often, and put the difference into a real snow foam.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a foam cannon made for my brand of pressure washer?
Usually no. Most consumer machines end in a 1/4-inch quick-connect, and most cannons ship with that plug, so the cannon is brand-agnostic. The exceptions are machines with a proprietary lance fitting — Kärcher's K2 to K7 bayonet being the common one — where you either buy the brand's own foam nozzle or add a cheap adapter that converts the bayonet to a quick-connect.
How much flow does a foam cannon need?
More than most people expect. Chemical Guys publishes a minimum of 1.4 GPM for its Max Foam 8 and recommends 2.0 GPM. Plenty of paint-safe electric washers sit below that — a Kärcher K1700 is about 1.2 GPM and a Greenworks 1800 about 1.1 GPM. They still foam, just thinner and more slowly. Will a cheap foam cannon work as well as an expensive one on the same washer?
On foam thickness, very nearly. The variables that dominate are your machine's flow rate and your soap, and those are identical whichever cannon you hang off the end. What the money buys is brass and stainless internals instead of plastic, a smoother adjustment collar and a bottle that is nicer to fill — durability and feel, not lather.
My cannon fits and still barely foams. What is wrong?
Work through it in this order: soap first, ratio second, flow third, cannon last. A thin all-purpose shampoo will not foam through any cannon; a dedicated snow foam will. Then open the soap-ratio collar. Then check your machine's rated GPM against the cannon's published minimum. The hardware itself is the least likely culprit and the most expensive thing to replace.
Can I use a foam cannon on a gas pressure washer?
Yes, within limits, and gas machines are usually the best foamers because they move the most water. Chemical Guys rates the Max Foam 8 from 500 to 3,500 PSI and warns never to exceed 5.3 GPM. Check your machine against the cannon's published ceiling — a big gas unit can be too much for a cannon, which is the opposite of the problem most people have.
