How to Maintain a Ceramic Coating

A coating is not maintenance-free, it is maintenance-different. Most coatings that 'fail early' were not defective — they were washed with the wrong things.

The most common story about ceramic coatings is a disappointing one: someone pays for an eighteen-month coating, and eight months later the water is not beading and the car feels rough. The coating gets blamed. Occasionally that is fair.

Far more often the coating did exactly what it was meant to and was then maintained as though it were a normal painted car — which, chemically, it is not.

What a coating actually is

A cured layer of silica bonded to the clear coat. Not a film sitting on top like wax, and not something you can top up by adding more of the same.

Two consequences follow, and they define the whole maintenance routine:

  • It is chemically vulnerable. Strongly acidic or alkaline chemistry degrades the SiO2 structure over repeated exposure. This is why coating makers are unanimous about pH-neutral washing.
  • It is not scratch-proof.It resists chemical etching and helps dirt release. It does not stop a grit particle under a mitt from marking the surface, and marring a coating is worse than marring paint — correcting it means removing coating you paid for.

So the routine is: gentle chemistry, minimal contact, done often.

The maintenance wash

Every two to four weeks is the widely recommended rhythm, and coating makers emphasize washing often enough that contamination never gets a chance to bond. The good news is that a coated car washes very easily, so this is far less of an imposition than it sounds.

  1. Wheels first. Brake dust is the most aggressive contamination on the car, and doing wheels first means your paint mitt never sees it. Use a pH-safe wheel cleaner if the wheels are coated too.
  2. Pre-rinse thoroughly. More grit removed here is less dragged later.
  3. Foam pre-soak. Coating makers specifically recommend foam encapsulation to lift dirt without friction, which is exactly what a cannon and a coating-safe snow foam do.
  4. Two buckets, grit guards, pH-neutral shampoo. The two-bucket methodis not optional here — it is explicitly part of the recommended coating routine.
  5. Sheet rinse and dry gently. A coated car sheets water beautifully, so most of it leaves without a towel. That is a genuine bonus: fewer towel passes is less contact.

What to keep away from it

  • Dish soap and household degreasers.Strongly alkaline and built to strip films — the single worst common mistake, covered in can you use dish soap.
  • Wash-and-wax shampoos.Not damaging, but counterproductive: the film masks the coating’s water behavior and breaks down unevenly.
  • Brush and soft-cloth automatic washes. Coating makers warn that brush systems combine recycled harsh chemicals with abrasive contact and wear protection faster than hand washing. Detail in are automatic washes bad for paint.
  • Strong all-purpose cleaners on paint. Fine, well diluted, for arches and tires. Not on coated panels.
  • Anything applied before the coating has cured.Follow the manufacturer’s curing window before putting maintenance products on top of a fresh coating.

Toppers: the part most people skip

This is the maintenance step that genuinely extends a coating’s useful life, and the mechanism is worth understanding.

An SiO2 topper — a ceramic detailer or spray coating — deposits a fresh, compatible silica layer on top of the cured coating. Coating makers describe this as a renewable top layer that absorbs environmental damage while the base layer stays intact. Applied roughly monthly, or every second or third wash, it means the surface being weathered, contaminated and towel-dried is the cheap sacrificial layer rather than the expensive bonded one.

It also refreshes the hydrophobics, which is the visible reason people do it and the reason it becomes a habit.

The one caveat, said honestly: once you are running a topper, the beading you see is the topper’s. You lose the ability to read the base coating’s condition from water behavior alone. That is a fair trade — just do not conclude the coating has failed the first time you skip a top-up and beading looks worse.

Decontamination on a coated car

Coatings do not prevent iron fallout from embedding, and a coated car that feels rough is usually contaminated rather than worn out. This is the most commonly misdiagnosed thing in the whole category.

Run the plastic bag test: wash and dry the car, put your hand in a thin sandwich bag and glide your fingertips over the paint. If it feels gritty, it is contamination.

  • Clay with caution. Clayingis mechanical and will shorten a coating’s life. Do the chemical decon first, and only clay what still feels rough afterwards.
  • Re-top afterwards. Any decontamination removes some of your sacrificial layer. Follow it with a topper.

Reading whether a coating is genuinely failing

Three signs, and they should appear together:

  1. Water beads become smaller and less pronounced, then stop forming.
  2. Dirt starts adhering firmly instead of rinsing away easily.
  3. The surface loses slickness and feels rougher under your fingertips.

Before concluding the coating has worn out, work through the alternatives: is it contaminated (bag test), has it been washed with something harsh, and has it simply been a while since the last topper? Those account for most apparent failures, and all three are fixable in an afternoon.

If it genuinely has worn through, the honest position is that spray coatings often deliver less than headline claims in the real world — which is why the product you choose and the maintenance you give it both matter.
